The Youth Revolution: We Can, We Will, We Must.

On 1st October 2020, we celebrated the sixtieth year of independence in my motherland, Nigeria.

Of course, this was a good time to reminiscence the old years we fought for our redemption from colonial rule.

But, 60years down the line, we still write the story of how our lives have continually been taken for granted, though we have a democracy, it still seems like a reign of overlords and brute power.

We celebrate 60years of wanton pain, anguish, destruction of homes, excessive killings and reckless disregard of fundamental human rights.

We have become used to having less than we deserve, our rights have become surreal to us, and we continually question the basis of our freedom.

We fear expressing our views on real issues, because "the walls have ears", but must we continue to sit on the sidelines, while the essence of our civilization is despised?

We will speak up, and if it attracts dire consequences, then, so be it.

Consider this to be an outcry for peace, justice and a reformed society! We must not have to choose between facing two devils: the known betrayal of democratically-elected leaders, and the unknown destination of an armed personnel’s bullet.

We owe the future generation the duty to take action against impunity and injustice, now and not tomorrow.

It is constitutional that we have the freedom to express our heartfelt concerns. We must continue to speak up! Loudly and clearly!

This generation of youths have started something unique, progress may be slow, but we have started well. We must never give up this struggle!

Let’s document our actions for the next generation, and for the resolve of history. In subsequent post, I will recap on the matters arising, and state my views on the way forward.

Yours in the struggle,
Chukwuemeka Orukwowu.
